More Vampires (_The Hunt_ by Andrew Fukuda, May 2012)

Standard

Andrew Fukuda’s The Hunt is a the story of a futuristic world of vampires. Gene, a human boy, masquarades as a vampire every night by wearing fake fangs, covering up his body odor, and showing no emotion. Gene is able to keep his masquarade going without too many issues, until the day he and six other vampires win the lottery, a lottery where the winners get to hunt the remaining “hepers” (humans) out of exsistence. Forced to spend time with government officials who spend their lives studying humans, Gene knows that his chances of surviving the Heper Hunt are slim.

I couldn’t put this book down. The plot was fast and somewhat confusing to follow with all of its twists and turns. You never knew what was going to happen, or who Gene could trust. You really couldn’t even tell whether Gene wanted to be a vampire, or wanted to have things go back to the way they were.

While I felt many aspects of the book were similar to those of The Hunger Games and many vampire books/movies, The Hunt is a completely original book. Fukuda’s vampires are not typical vampires: they show no emotions and are not capable of laughter. If you ask me, vampires are one of the scariest types of monsters, and reading about a world like this freaked me out. But I absolutely loved this book. I promise that it is unlike any vampire story you have ever read. It’s not a vempire with a love story like in Twilight and and it’s not about vampires preying on the unsuspecting. Instead, The Hunt is a story about vampires who have created a society in which they are the dominant species.

  1. I always dreamed of winning he lottery….only looks like Gene managed to win in the wrong lottery!!! Greeting from Liberia…a little contrast from the visit in Montana…all goes well here. We are getting an office/showroom/warehouse set up for the solar lights…lots of meetings. It is rainy season, so in the late afternoon there are storms. I am staying near the beach, so have beautiful sun sets. Hope to be going upcountry, into the interior, next week. I will try to take some pictures. Meeting a lot of old friends…even some people on the plane I knew…this is a very small country…Hi to everyone in Missoula…good luck with finishing out the school year. Looking forward to spending time with you in Santa Fe. Gpa Rich
